What is Christmas?
Christmas is a Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus on the 25th of December every year. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Christmas has also been celebrated as a day free of religious motives, instead focusing on gifts, and it is also celebrated by non-Christian people. In this secular version of Christmas, the mythological figure Santa Claus plays an important role. When is Christmas celebrated?
Christmas is celebrated by the majority of Christians worldwide on the 25th of December every year. The word Christmas comes from the Latin word Natalis meaning “birth.” Christmas is called Weihnachten in German, Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, and Noël in French.
In English, it is expressed as Christmas but can also appear as Xmas. Additionally, it is recognized as Yule in Pagan beliefs. Yule is a winter celebration lasting from the winter solstice on December 21st for the following 12 days.
