Halloween is celebrated every year on October 31st, generally by Western countries. The roots of Halloween actually go back to Pagan traditions and then to early Christian practices. Halloween, which originally represented the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, was initially a special day with a different meaning, later influenced by Christianity. Halloween means “Evening of All Hollows” in the old language. According to various sources from different countries, Halloween was first celebrated in pre-Christian times in England, Ireland, and Scotland. While the Celts celebrated the day marking the end of the harvest festival, Christians, who arrived centuries later, began to honor all saints and martyrs on this day.
Unlike many other religious-based festivals, Halloween is celebrated specifically on October 31st each year. Nowadays, we have left the month of March and entered April, so it is easy to calculate how many days remain until Halloween this year. You can see the countdown above on this page to track the number of days until Halloween.
There are various special traditions associated with Halloween. Let’s briefly mention some of them:
Pumpkin: The pumpkin is one of the most important symbols of Halloween. Before the holiday, pumpkins of various sizes are carved, shaped, and displayed in front of houses. In Ireland and Scotland, radishes were used for this purpose before pumpkins became popular. It was believed that this practice scared away evil spirits, regardless of the material used.
Foods: Besides pumpkin, one of the most common treats during the holiday is candied apples. Homemade apple candies, chocolates, and other sweets are often given to children.
Costumes: According to tradition, children wear costumes and paint their faces so that wandering spirits do not recognize them. Then, they visit neighboring houses to show off their costumes.
The origins of many Halloween festivals celebrated with various fun activities in different countries each year trace back to the Samhain Festival of the Pagan Celtic people, who lived in Great Britain, Ireland, and northern France about 2,000 years ago. It was believed that at the end of October, the spirits of the dead would visit the living world, marking the beginning of winter and the end of the harvest. During the celebrations, people dressed in various costumes and masks to avoid being recognized by these spirits. Over time, the Samhain Festival became associated with witches, folklore, and demons.
